Julius Jelto van Unia lived in the eighteenth century, a time when the Frisian nobility was still strongly connected to land, power and landscape. Van Unia lived on the Unia State in Metslawier, near the village of Ee. This state was more than just a house: it was the center of his estates and the symbol of his status. From Metslawier he managed his possessions, spoke with tenants and supervised the farms that bore his name. The state stood literally and figuratively at the heart of Friesland.

One of those farms was Unia Zathe, which remained in his possession for a long time.
